Worried about her old age, she discussed adopting a puppy with her daughter Debbie, who shared her love of animals. But Debbie looked up, nervous about her mother’s mobility.
Fortunately, Muttville, a unique shelter in San Francisco, helps special dogs find loving homes. Through their “Seniors for Seniors” initiative, senior citizens and elderly dogs are matched for mutual friendship.
Gnocchi, a gentle Chihuahua saved from a fostering situation, waited for a miracle at Muttville. He was toothless and frequently overlooked, making him the ideal partner for Johanna. Once shy, Gnocchi realizes he is waiting for someone special, and Johanna is that person.

In an interview, adoption counselor Alice Ensor stated her first shock upon receiving Johanna’s adoption questionnaire. Observing that a few older adults are trying to adopt a new friend, she recognized Johanna’s difference as a dog lover, hoping to find a pet before turning 101. Johanna showed responsibility by carefully outlining her situation in the detailed application and providing proof of her strong support group. Her caretaker, Eddie, agreed to walk the dog daily, and Debbie informed the shelter that she would be happy to adopt Gnocchi if Johanna passed away before him. The adoption was completed through a video conference, which resulted in an affectionate bond between Johanna and Gnocchi.
Her adoption request included in-depth information about Johanna’s situation and a promise to the shelter that her daughter and caretaker, Eddie, would assist with dog care.
